Pilot Shirt Fabric Guide

Fabric shapes how a pilot shirt feels, performs, and looks across a duty day; how much ironing it needs, how it handles heat and humidity, and how it holds up to frequent wear. BomCrewMall offers four pilot shirt fabrics: Pegasus, Super Bamboo, Lockheed, and Miami. None of them is best for every pilot; each is built around a different priority.

Availability: Tailored orders offer all four fabrics. Standard Fit (Ready to Wear) offers two: Lockheed (included) and Super Bamboo (premium upgrade).

Pegasus

Pegasus is a poly-rayon twill with a smooth, medium-thickness feel. Its strongest characteristic is wrinkle resistance rated 5/5 and described as almost never needing ironing, along with a less see-through finish and resistance to pilling. For pilots who wear their uniform frequently and want to spend the least time maintaining it, Pegasus is the most balanced option in the range. Available on Tailored orders.

Super Bamboo

Also labeled Aerosoft or PolyBamboo on some shirts, same fabric. Made from 50% polyester and 50% bamboo rayon, it's positioned as BomCrewMall's "Best Sweat-Wicking" fabric: it keeps you dry on hot, humid routes and offers a soft feel with natural stretch comfort. Its 4.5/5 wrinkle-free rating means this comfort doesn't come at a major cost to wrinkle resistance. Available on both Tailored and Standard Fit, where it's the premium upgrade over Lockheed.

Miami

A cotton-rich blend of 57% cotton and 43% polyester with a crisper, more pressed feel than the poly-rayon fabrics. It's breathable and resists pilling, but its main appeal isn't wrinkle resistance (3.5/5): it's the more natural cotton feel and traditional, pressed look. It's also the only dry-clean-only fabric in the range, so factor that into your rotation if you fly frequently. Available on Tailored orders.

Lockheed

A straightforward polycotton fabric: 80% polyester, 20% cotton, and the standard included fabric on both product lines. At 2/5 wrinkle-free, it needs more ironing than the other three, but it doesn't require an upgrade. It's a reasonable choice if you don't have a strong preference on the dimensions the other fabrics specialize in.

If you'd rather not decide, BomCrewMall's "Help Me Choose" option on Tailored orders matches you to a fabric before the shirt is made.

Fabric and Fit, Chosen Together

Fabric determines how the shirt performs; fit determines how it sits on your body. The two are independent decisions. A pilot with non-standard proportions flying hot, humid routes might pair a Comfort or Trim Tailored fit with Super Bamboo. A pilot whose Regular or Classic fit already works well and who wants minimal maintenance might pair that with Pegasus. Choosing fabric doesn't lock in your fit, and choosing fit doesn't lock in your fabric pick; choose each based on what it actually governs.

No more tailor visits

Most pilots who buy a stock shirt end up at a tailor to take in the waist or fix the sleeves. That costs money each time, and it costs days at home that you do not get back. A Tailor Your Way shirt is a tailored pilot shirt, cut to you from the start, so it arrives ready to wear. For a custom pilot shirt, there is no tailor visit, no alteration bill, and no waiting.

Before ordering a tailored shirt, review our Pilot Shirt Measurement Guide to understand how measurements help determine the right fit.
